Documents You’ll Need When Applying for Universal Credit

Applying for Universal Credit can be quicker and smoother if you have the correct documents ready. Below is a full checklist of the most common information and paperwork you’ll need during your application process — whether you apply online or in person at your local Jobcentre Plus office.

✅ Proof of Identity

You must prove who you are. You can usually do this through the GOV.UK Verify service or by attending an appointment.

  • UK Passport or Driving Licence
  • National Identity Card (for EU citizens)
  • Biometric Residence Permit
  • Birth or adoption certificate

🏠 Proof of Address and Housing Costs

If you’re applying for help with rent, you’ll need to provide documents that show:

  • Your current address (e.g. utility bill, bank letter)
  • Tenancy agreement or rent book
  • Letter from your landlord with your rent amount and payment details

💷 Income and Employment Information

DWP needs to know your current financial situation. You’ll be asked to provide:

  • Recent payslips (if employed)
  • Accounts or self-assessment details (if self-employed)
  • Details of any savings, investments, or pensions
  • Information about any other benefits you're receiving

🏦 Bank Details

You’ll need a bank, building society, or credit union account to receive payments.

  • Account holder name
  • Sort code and account number

👶 Childcare and Dependant Details

If you’re applying as a parent or carer, be ready with:

  • Children’s birth certificates
  • Childcare provider’s name and registration number
  • Childcare costs (receipts or contract)

👫 Your Partner’s Information

If you live with a partner, you’ll both need to apply together and provide:

  • Partner’s National Insurance number
  • Partner’s income and employment details
  • Partner’s ID and bank details

🧾 National Insurance Number

Your NI number is essential. If you don’t have one, you may need to apply for it first through GOV.UK.

  • Take photos or scans of paper documents in advance
  • Use a secure, working email address you can access easily
