Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a disability benefit for people aged 16 to State Pension age who need help with daily living or getting around because of a long-term health condition or disability.
What Is Personal Independence Payment (PIP)?
PIP is designed to help with the extra costs caused by long-term illness or disability. It is not means-tested, which means it is not affected by your income, savings, or whether you are in work.
Who Can Claim PIP?
You may be able to claim PIP if:
- You are aged 16 or over
- You have a physical or mental health condition
- Your condition affects your daily living or mobility
- You expect these difficulties to last at least 12 months
You Do Not Need a Diagnosis
PIP is awarded based on how your condition affects you, not the name of the condition itself. Two people with the same diagnosis may receive different outcomes.
Working and PIP
You can still claim PIP if you work full-time, part-time, or are self-employed. Many people wrongly assume working disqualifies them — it does not.
Residence Rules
You must usually live in Great Britain and have been resident for at least 2 of the last 3 years.
